What drives the price

  • Length. The farther your house sits from the street, the more pipe and digging.
  • Method. Trenchless methods pull the new pipe through the path of the old one from two small pits, which saves lawns and driveways and is often cheaper. Open trenching costs more to restore.
  • Depth and soil. Deep frost lines (Minnesota, Wisconsin) and rocky soil add cost.
  • What's in the way. Driveways, sidewalks, trees, porches and finished basements.
  • Permits and the public side. Some cities charge permit and inspection fees, and some make the owner pay for the street cut too.
  • Restoration. Lawn, concrete and interior wall repairs are often excluded from free programs.

How much will a program cover?

It ranges from everything to nothing. Cincinnati, Columbus, Saint Paul, Denver and many New Jersey utilities replace the private side for free. Iowa City pays 50% up to $5,000. Fort Wayne pays up to 90% based on income. Dayton leaves the cost to owners. Use the calculator with your quote and your utility's terms, or find your program.

Before you pay: many free programs only cover work done by the utility's contractor, and don't reimburse owners who hire their own plumber (Aurora, Illinois, says so explicitly). Ask first.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a lead water line from the street to the house?

Usually $4,000 to $10,000 for the private side, depending on length, digging method, depth and restoration. Some utilities pay all or part of it.

Is trenchless lead pipe replacement cheaper?

Often, because it needs only two small pits instead of a trench across the yard, so restoration costs less. It isn't possible on every property.

Does homeowners insurance cover lead pipe replacement?

Usually not. Homeowners policies cover sudden damage, not replacing an old pipe because of its material. A service line warranty may cover repairs if the line breaks or leaks.
