About Lead Line Grants and how we research programs
Lead Line Grants tracks who pays to replace lead water service lines, one utility at a time, so homeowners can find out quickly whether they qualify for a free or discounted replacement.
Where the data comes from
- Lead line counts come from EPA's SDWIS Service Line Inventory report (Q3 2026), as reported by each water system. Galvanized means galvanized requiring replacement.
- Program terms (225 utilities so far) come from utility and city websites, council documents, state agencies and local news. Every program box lists its sources and the date we checked it.
- State rules come from state statutes, regulators and agency guidance, cited on each state page.
We cover 432 utilities: every system that reported at least 1,000 lead or galvanized-requiring-replacement lines, plus smaller systems where we've confirmed a program.
How we keep it current
Funding often runs out mid-year and programs change with each budget. We recheck every program at least once a year and whenever a reader reports a change. Always confirm terms with your utility before signing up or hiring a contractor.
What we're not
We're independent: not a utility, government agency or contractor. Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice. For health questions about lead, see the CDC or your doctor.
How the site is funded
We earn money when readers request contractor quotes and when they buy through some product links (filters, test kits). That never changes what we say about a utility's program. See the disclosure.
